Separation in the Case of a Non-Fixed Veset
Question
When the menstrual cycle has irregular intervals, and the time of day is also not fixed, is separation required? How is it calculated?
Answer
Shalom u’vrachah.
This situation is defined in Halachah as a “veset she’einah kevua” — a non-fixed cycle.
In such a case, there are 3 days of separation:
A. Onah beinonit — the 30th day from the previous sighting. The day of the sighting is counted as day no. 1, and on the 30th day one must separate and perform an examination. [Some have the custom to separate also on the 31st day.]
B. Onat haflagah — one counts the number of days from the previous sighting until the current sighting. This same number of days is then counted from the current sighting until the next day of separation.
C. Onat hachodesh — in the following month, one is concerned for the Hebrew calendar date of the last sighting.
