A chapter of Tehillim as Torah study?

Question

When one wishes to fulfill the obligation of Torah study at night mentioned in the blessing "Ahavat Olam" – is it sufficient to read chapters of Tehillim after the prayer, or is it specifically necessary to study from the Five Books of the Torah, from Mishnah, or from Gemara?

Answer

Shalom u’vracha

One may recite a chapter of Tehillim with the intention of Torah study. However, not when they are being said as prayer and supplication.

Verses that are recited in the manner of prayer, according to the Rema (Orach Chaim, siman 46, se’if 9), do not require Birkat HaTorah.
